I think Trump wants attention and money and to be able to just order people to do what he wants - but I don't think he actually cares about governing in any way. So, he's OK with delegating the nitty gritty to Musk and letting him rampage through the federal agencies, while Trump gets to do all the pageantry with writing his name on the executive orders.
Watching Elon and his kid next to Trump at that press conference, it was clear they have worked out some kind of arrangement.
The long-term effects of these firings is what worries me.
