From what I've heard, there have been lots of work done to clean it up - but water quality still not great. This thread on the Basel subReddit gives some advice for visitors:

Basically, only go in at the authorized spots, when the water is above 18C, and the water level is not too high.
Possibly of greater concern than water quality is that there are very strong currents in parts.
If it were me, I would only do it in a boat. But it does look fun!
