It's never too late if you want to go back and do it. I think there are more low-residency master's programs (combining on-campus and distance coursework) in Europe, now. And if you have permanent residency anywhere in the EU you can study in an EU country for the same tuition/costs as a resident of that country.
That "Gap Year" sounds like a VERY good idea-not only to learn the language, but to mature a little.
So exciting! I would have loved to go to grad school in France when I was fluent. I think I got intimidated to try.

Wait, that is blowing my mind, because I was looking at some of the tuition as a US citizen and not a resident of Italy...!!!
